How to make Valentine's Day special
Love is in the air with Valentine’s Day just days away. And with it comes the inevitable panic; what gift do I buy to show I care? A trip to the service station for a box of Cadbury Roses isn’t ideal. To help give you some ideas, The Times spoke to several businesses to find out what’s been popular for that day of love.
Flowers are always a safe option. At Flowers Matter its Cat Hammill range is available, which is a big hit with the ladies. For the guys, why not wow them with a bouquet?
Add a bottle of champagne or red wine or even a personalised gourmet hamper.
The Flower Spot can help you with a range of bouquets and their single stem roses in a bud vase are exquisite.
For gifts that last a lifetime, try a piece of jewellery. Alexander Jewellers has a huge range of Pandora jewellery, specially selected beads for Valentine’s Day and jewellery boxes.
Sterling silver products have been a popular choice, including heart pendants, earrings and bracelets, especially the padlock bracelets.
Gold necklaces with heart pendants and nine carat gold bracelets with padlocks have also been popular items.
Looking for a lovely spot to have personal time after work? Currency Creek Winery has a special Valentine’s Day dinner.
Its a la carte menu will be served, where you will be treated to a candlelight dinner with roses on your table and each guest will receive a glass of bubbles.
Service is between 6pm and 8pm that night and your booking should be placed early by phoning 8555 4013.
Lingerie can show your partner’s more sensual side. Carefully chosen, it can complement your partner’s best assets.
Satin or lace top-and-bottom pieces are always a favourite to give a complete look. It doesn’t always have to be a bikini top and bottom, longer singlets and little shorts may cover more, but they also leave a bit more mystery!
Be sure to check your partner’s underwear sizes to ensure the pieces fit. If in doubt, speak to the staff at Serene Secrets, who may also assist with gift vouchers.
What do you buy a new flame?
The best thing about living on the south coast for Valentine’s Day is the fact we’re by the beach and it’s still warm and sunny at night.
For me, the perfect Valentines’ Day would involve my loved one sending me a surprise bunch of roses delivered to my office and a cute little card with a teddy on it and later, sipping champagne with strawberries in the glass while enjoying a picnic on the beach.
But to me, such gestures would only seem appropriate if I was in a steady and established relationship. But what do you do when you’re just courting?
You see, the only times I’ve been genuinely excited about Valentine’s Day have been while I’ve been seeing people, but not when I’ve been in a relationship. One year, I took over Mum’s kitchen by getting the butter, flour and coconut out and made chocolate rum balls, thinking that’d be enough to convince the person I was chasing to be my partner. Unfortunately, love didn’t blossom on that one, which partially could have been attributed to the fact we chose Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino as our date movie.
This year, another potential partner has come my way. They’ve bought me flowers already, so I feel that’s put the pressure on me to buy them a gift for Valentine’s Day. Jewellery seems a bit much, but a home-baked treat not enough.
Perhaps I’m just thinking about it all too much? So I appeal to you instead, ladies and gentlemen, what is the best gift I should get? Jump on our Facebook page by searching The Times, Victor Harbor and post your suggestions there.
