PORT ELLIOT - A Port Elliot dry zone has been proposed in a bid to combat the rising number of late night drinkers causing damage on The Strand and North Terrace.
The proposal came before the Alexandrina Council last month when Councillor Alan Oliver met with residents, hoteliers and business owners at the Victor Harbor Police Station to discuss a recent number of disturbances in the town centre.
"Of concern was the growing number of out-of-hours drinkers gathering in and around The Strand after 1am who have caused considerable damage to property and the streetscape," acting chief executive Mike Shelly wrote in a report to council.
"The two hotels in Port Elliot have joined forces to share information on troublesome patrons in an attempt to mitigate the problem, which appears to have moved from Victor Harbor since their hotel hours were reduced for the same reason."
Inspired by the recent success of the Strathalbyn dry zone, police, residents and business owners suggested the same be trialled in Port Elliot.
At the October 19 council meeting, Councillor Jim Davis said residents are regularly woken up at 1am by disturbances on Friday and Saturday nights.
"Police suggesed that since the dry zone has worked so well in Strathalybn, that it should be done for Port Elliot," he said.
"The whole community is in favour of it."
A detailed dry zone proposal was passed by council at Monday night's meeting.
Including areas identified by police as problem hot spots, the suggested dry zone covers an area stretching from Rosetta Terrace to the amphitheatre in Basham's Beach Park and out to the coastline.
It is proposed alcohol will be banned within the dry area from 10pm to 6pm the following day, seven days a week.
The Alexandrina Council will now conduct public consultation on the proposal before reporting back to the council.
