Funding boost for two schools

04 Feb, 2010 08:54 AM
VICTOR HARBOR/MOUNT COMPASS - Victor Harbor High and Mount Compass Area School are set to receive significant funding from the state government's School Pride Asset Program.

Allocated for school maintenance projects, the state government is handing out $30 million in grants to various schools across South Australia.

Victor Harbor High School received $200,000 for the continual demolition of various buildings throughout the schools major redevelopment, and a further $13,000 for asbestos removal.

Principal Peter Crawford said he is delighted.

"I look upon it really favourably, we have massive building going on and we will have old buildings beyond being reused and recycled in need of demolition," he said.

"It's all linked in with the timing of the new building coming on stream."

Mount Compass Area School was allocated $50,000 for the demolition of the rundown building 14, and a further $62,000 for improvements to underground piping on the site.

Mount Compass Principal Pat Maloney said the funding would be put to very good use.

"We're trying to update and upgrade the school, the building is very rundown, it will be great to have that extra space," he said.

"The piping has been an issue for quite a while, it's great to have something done about that."

Country Labor candidate for the seat of Finniss, Mary-Lou Corcoran said every little bit counts.

"It's about making it safe for the future generation and children going through their schooling currently," she said.
