REGION – Morgan Park Estate residents will have mail delivered to their homes from next year.
But Currency Creek will miss out after only 42 per cent of residents voted in favour of a postal delivery service.
Australia Post considered residents who did not respond to the poll, which was conducted in September, to be not in favour of the mail delivery service.
Nearly 60 per cent of Morgan Park Estate residents voted in favour of a street mail delivery service.
The delivery service is likely to commence from January 4, 2010.
“We said to residents that Australia Post would put a delivery service in, providing this was what the majority of people wanted,” said Australia Post spokesperson Joshua Zugajev.
“The majority of Morgan Park Estate residents have now spoken and we will happily deliver on our commitment to the community.’’
Morgan Park Estate resident Keith Joy, one of a number of residents who initially pushed for the delivery service, was pleased with the outcome.
“There’s two reasons why we wanted the delivery,” said Mr Joy.
“The first was that we’re getting older and having mail delivered to our house makes things a bit easier.
“Secondly, it takes about half an hour to get down there and collect your mail and there are never any parks close by.”
Currency Creek resident Clare Dingsdale said the result of their Australia Post poll was “a little disappointing”.
“It would have been nice to have it (the delivery service),” she said.
“Having a letter box on the main road was a little bit of a safety concern, but we voted in favour of the service.”
Mr Zugajev said that although some residents would be disappointed with the Currency Creek outcome, it was an indicator of what residents wanted.
“There will understandably be a number of Currency Creek residents disappointed in the outcome of their poll, but the result illustrates the importance of undertaking the polling process,” he said.
“It has prevented a situation where a minority of residents could have brought about a significant change, which the poll results indicate the majority of residents do not want.”
