GOOLWA/ HINDMARSH ISLAND - Goolwa Medical Centre is extending its presence on the south coast, securing the services of three new doctors and opening a branch clinic at Hindmarsh Island.
Doctors Willem Joubert and Fiona Dostal are among the new faces at the medical centre, with Dr Lara van der Wielen taking up her post on February 15.
Practice manager Brenda Allan said the centre was fortunate to sign up three new doctors, with GPs becoming a dying breed in regional areas.
"There is such a shortage of doctors on the south coast, but there is hope there that people want to come and there are great lifestyle options for our GPs," she said.
"It shows there is change happening."
Joining the practice in July last year, Dr Joubert has become a partner along with existing doctors Carolyn Miller, Steve Byrne, Mark Miller, Alan Gane, and Philip Davidson.
His wife and diabetes educator Esthea Joubert will consult from the Hindmarsh Island branch on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Deciding to make a sea change with her husband George, Dr Dostal began at the Goolwa Medical Centre earlier this month and will also head the Hindmarsh Island branch, which opens today.
She will also continue training trainee doctors, with two Flinders University medical students beginning at the centre.
Both doctors are enjoying their new lifestyle on the south coast, with Dr Joubert recently taking up wine making as his new hobby and Dr Dostal showing an appreciation for the region's visual arts.
They will be joined by Dr van der Wielen, who has become a familiar face to local practices over the last few years and will work between the Middleton branch and Goolwa clinic.
Between taking on new doctors and the busy Middleton branch, Ms Allan said the centre took the opportunity to extend their services into Hindmarsh Island.
"I've been here 10 years and to see the growth in that time from small beginnings has been amazing," she said.
"Now we've been able to touch the people of Hindmarsh Island, so that is really good.
"Initially the branch will just be open two days a week, but if demand is there we might extend consulting days."
The Hindmarsh Island branch will initially be open on Tuesday and Thursdays from 9am-5pm and is located on Randell Road.
Patients will be greeted by familiar staff members Sylvie and Jo at the reception desk.
Emergency treatment will continue to be managed at the Goolwa clinic with pre-booked appointments only at the branch clinics.
