REGION - A federal Liberal government would chip in $2million towards a south coast swimming pool complex, Mayo MP Jamie Briggs announced this week.
Mr Briggs said his survey of Mayo residents and feedback to his mobile electorate office had shown a pool to be a major issue for the south coast.
"A swimming pool has long been in demand and become increasingly necessary as the population grows rapidly.
He said the funding would be provided to councils to ensure the best possible pool was built.
"It will provide increased opportunities for residents of all ages and create many employment opportunities, particularly for young people in the area.
"A swimming pool will also help improve health outcomes in the area by encouraging an active community."
"The enormous demand for a pool has come from all sections of the community."
Alexandrina mayor Kym McHugh said the funding announcement was great news for the district.
"The councils will be talking to the federal government about matching the offer."
Mr McHugh said he looked forward to releasing more information about the progress of the proposed pool development, but for the time being much was commercial in confidence.
Although Mayo is regarded as a safe Liberal seat, Mr Briggs said he did not take his position for granted and would continue to fight for investment in key community infrastructure.
"I’m disappointed that Labor does not seem to be taking the seat seriously," he said.
