REGION - The Lions Youth of the Year regional final was held at the Victor Harbor RSL Hall on Sunday, March 7.
Six youths representing Lions Clubs from Yankalilla, Victor Harbor, Mitcham, Aberfoyle Districts, Edwardstown and Brighton took part in the competition in a bid to make the state final later this month.
Lions Zone Chairman Tony Jimmieson, a member of the Yankalilla and Districts Lions Club said the day was very successful.
"Out of the whole six students there was very little between them," Mr Jimmieson said.
"Between first and third there were three points, the way it's worked out, no one judge would know who was the winner until they add the points at the end.
"There was a good number in the audience, made up of friends, relatives and Lions members from the different clubs," he said.
Judging the competition were Victor Harbor deputy mayor Pat Chigwidden, Tania Baldock from the Yankalilla council and representing the National Australia Bank, John Connor from Victor Harbor.
The judges privately interviewed each of the entrants for 30 to 40 minutes quizzing them on four general knowledge questions, before two impromptu questions were put to each entrant.
Participants then gave a five minute prepared speech for the public speaking component of the competition.
The winner of the regional final was Saxon Cameron from the Edwardstown Lions Club.
Saxon will now compete in the state final at the Marion council chambers on March 21.
Isaac Astill from Yankalilla came second overall, while third place went to Gabriella Coot from the Brighton Lions Club.
The day was hosted by the Victor Harbor/Port Elliot Lions Club, while local policeman Graham Philp was Master of Ceremonies.
