Salmon keeping sharks at Normanville

19 Nov, 2009 11:25 AM
NORMANVILLE - Schools of salmon are to blame for the influx of Bronze Whaler sharks to Normanville waters, which resulted in an attack on 25-year-old Dean Brougham last week.

This is according to local fisherman Christopher Marshall who said the schools of salmon are expected to stay in the region for up to eight weeks.

"Due to the salmon, the sharks and dolphins have an opportunity to get a good feed," he said.

"The sharks will be around for quite sometime."

Mr Marshall also noted that despite the local and metropolitan lifesavers efforts to scare away sharks, Bronze Whalers are difficult to discourage.

"They only leave for up to three quarters of an hour (after driven out to sea). Once they're in a feeding frenzy, stay away," he said.

Mr Marshall discouraged swimmers to enter the water at sunrise and sunset, as the sharks generally feed during those periods.

Todd Scheer of the Normanville Surf Lifesaving Club said that the surf lifesavers are constantly "keeping an eye out".

"We've always got to be on the ball and do regular checks," he said.

"We keep water cover out there with the chopper and have extra patrols."

Mr Scheer also noted that surf lifesavers are able to remove people from the water efficiently once the shark siren sounds.

Bronze Whalers are not usually aggressive and Mr Scheer said that the chances of being attacked are slim.

"At the end of the day, your more likely getting hit by a car than attacked by a shark. They're more interested in the fish and the squid out there."

The Normanville Surf Lifesaving Club will continue to discourage the sharks with help from the spotter plane, helicopter and jet boats from neighbouring clubs.
