Student worming a state first

04 Nov, 2008 08:11 AM
VICTOR HARBOR - Victor Harbor R-7 School is set to be the first school in the state to provide a worming program to its students.

The program is part of a health and wellbeing focus that aims to ensure the health of indigenous and non-indigenous students at the school.

The school’s Aboriginal Community Education Officer (ACEO), Stacey Savage, obtained 12 boxes of worming products, that will begin to be distributed amongst indigenous children next week when permission slips are returned.

The Amcal Chemist in Cadell Street Goolwa and the Mount Compass Pharmacy donated six boxes of tablets each, in recognition of the often over-looked problem.

"They felt the need that it (the program) should be in all schools," Stacey said.

The pharmacists were not the only people impressed with the initiative with fellow ACEOs applauding the health and well being project.

"They thought it was amazing, a lot of the ACEOs didn't think it was in their job description," she explained.

In the seven years Stacey has worked with the Victor Harbor R-7 School she has "done a lot of work with Aboriginal healthcare."

She firmly believes that "none have been as important as this one", however.

One of the main reasons for distributing the tablets at school is to take the stress off parents.

With around 700 children currently attending the school, Stacey hopes in the future to further the project to include all indigenous children who haven't been wormed.

"You're never going to know unless you try," she commented.
