BASKETBALL: The Under 12 Division 1 Slammers team played in the Great Southern Basketball Carnival on February 20 and 21, 2010, beating out the Bullets to win the grand final.
Over two days they played five games; their first game was against a determined Murray Bridge team and due to a strong first half by the slammers enabled them to have a comfortable win 22 - 6.
The second game saw us play against the other home side the Division 2 Slammers, which is always a great competitive game, but we were far too tall and strong for them on the day winning 41 - 4.
The third game against Hornets saw the Slammers play against a team that had never played together and the final score reflected this, but to the credit of the Slammers’ girls they still played with determination and experience that saw them have their biggest win over the weekend 59-2.
The semi-final saw Slammers 1 playoff against an inexperienced Hornet’s team, but to their credit they had improved and held thescore to 35- 4, this win saw them move into the grand final.
In the grand final, the Slammers played against the Bullets, and the girls were full of excitement and enthusiasm knowing they had had won against Murray Bridge convincingly in their first match.
The first half saw the slammers team a little rattled with bad passing and silly errors, caused by the strong defense Murray Bridge, applied.
To the Slammers credit the girls came out firing in the second half, with the girls taking control of the game.
This saw the girls drive the lines, double team and show fantastic team play and with their experience and skill saw, them win the game quiet convincingly 23-2.
Best players for the grand final were Maddison Round, Jasmine Walker and Chelsea Couzner with Most Valuable player going to Bridget Treloar.
All nine girls within the Slammers team played a fantastic carnival with some great passages of play and teamwork and they should all be very proud of themselves.
With winning the Murray Bridge and the Great Southern Carnival’s, this leaves the girls in good stead for the State Country Championship that is to be held in March.
