YACHTING: Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club (GRYC) hosted the Australia Day Weekend Regatta over the long weekend prior to Australia Day.
Sailors and visitors were buzzing as they enjoyed the challenges of four races over two days, and the ambience and atmosphere of the club in the evenings following the races.
Balmy conditions provided a great reason to wine and dine, and listen to music and tales of the day’s events.
Twenty Six boats registered for the weekend races and competed on varied courses in the South Lakes vicinity, providing great spectacle for holiday makers along the foreshore.
Some sailors were still recovering from their bike ride from Adelaide the previous day but stood up to the use of different muscles and enjoyed their time in the boats.
Reading the course instructions proved vital for skippers as directions changed from race to race, and some had to back track or take a gamble on shallow waters across to the channel in order to rejoin their division.
This resulted in determined sailing with boats clawing their way back through the new leaders to regain positions.
Nautilus Marine Insurance sponsored the whole weekend.

The second race on Saturday was the traditional ‘Go for Gold’ race sponsored by Doser Freight Forwarding, and race director Rick Eylward made sure that everyone was on their toes as a more complicated set of instructions was presented for the race.
There was a scramble for pens and pencils so notes could be taken as skippers and crews interpreted where they were going.
However, they all made it good time and several skippers were overheard saying that the weekend was the best racing they had been in.
