Aldinga bounce out of the blocks

15 Oct, 2009 07:29 AM
CRICKET: The 2009/10 Great Southern Cricket season commenced on the weekend with one day cricket for senior teams and close results and upsets were the order of the day.

The Mount Compass Cricket Club have two A grade teams to prevent the bye and the reigning premiers Mount Compass Gold narrowly defeated Encounter Bay at Compass.

Compass has been strengthened by the inclusion of former Cricketer of the Year Michael Tomlinson and still has the power of Dzamko, Nash, Connor and exciting youngster Perovic.

The Bays relied on Edwards and Foggo with the bat, while Lintern and Butler tried hard with the ball.

However it was not enough to get over the line and Compass Gold have began their title defence in fine style.

Goolwa were the pace-setters early last season, but started this year badly, losing to Port Elliot.

The Robertson brothers went head to head with both having fantastic allround games and Hamish having the last laugh with a 13 run win to Elliot.

McLaren Districts easily accounted for the fledgling Mount Compass Maroon with Gianni Petrucci and Natale showing their class with the bat and the destroyer Bodie Wilson going nuts with the ball, capturing 5/14.

Aldinga produced the upset of the round rolling the top side for most of last season, Willunga.

Bryce Garrard scored a match winning 72 to take his team home with a surprising 15 overs to spare.

Round two

Round two of one day matches this weekend, satrating with Encounter Bay hosting Port Elliot, who is on a roll.

Hamish Robertson, Clarke and Smith will need to be stopped and the Bays need to get on the winner’s list or it will be catch up once again for the club.

The same for Willunga, who have to lick their wounds and face up against McLaren Districts at Willunga Park.

Ryan McMillan is in good form with the bat and Hockham with the ball, but will it be enough to defeat a very confident McLaren Districts side?

Goolwa are another who lost in the first round and will need to rebound at home.

However they are playing against the reigning premiers Mount Compass Gold.

Spurling and Victor Robertson have started the year well and with the captain Andy Evans leading from the front this match will go down to the last couple of overs.

Mount Compass Maroon play home against Aldinga.

Brown, Barrett and Binns will need to keep the score ticking over, as Aldinga are in a ruthless mood to start the season.
