CRICKET: Willunga’s Joel Garrett has just returned from a riveting series against India where he played three games in Tasmania and two games in Perth.
The talented right hand bat represented the Australian under 19 team and although the team lost the series 3-2, Joel says “it is the best experience I have had in cricket”.
“India is the benchmark for their age group and is so professional.
“After our series they had a 40 day camp and then were going to fly out for a series in South Africa.
“It was a great challenge and losing 3-2 is a good effort,” Garrett said.
Playing at Tasmania’s Test cricket venue, Bellerive, the Australian under 19 team lost two one day matches and the one two day match with Garrett top scoring in the first match with 29 and being dismissed cheaply in the next two.
Going to Perth the Australians won both the one day and two day games with Garrett scoring 52 and 35 not out and 25 not out.
“It was a good series and hopefully we will be going to the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane in the next school holidays,” Garrett said.
On arrival back home the 17-year-old Willunga High School student immediately picked up a football and kicked four goals for Willunga A grade side, where he played in the 2008 premiership.
