 Reversal of fortune for Bays

Reversal of fortune for Bays

04 Nov, 2009 04:07 PM
CRICKET: Encounter Bay did the near impossible in cricket circles on the weekend.

After losing on the first innings the Bays bundled out a confident Mount Compass Maroon for only 53 and then banged on the runs for the loss of only one wicket to gain outright points.

Lintern, Butler and Edwards were the stars for the Bays while Binns was one Maroon bat who fought hard at the crease.

Six points each is a good result for both sides and the Bays salvaged something from the match, as the turf wicket is starting to play more predictably.

Goolwa won their first match for the year defeating Willunga and chasing 175.

Spurling and Hayward were the mainstays of the Goolwa batting to record one of the rare victories Goolwa have had over Willunga in A grade competition.

Mount Compass Gold hung on against a spirited McLaren Districts who made a magnificent attempt to score the 287 required.

Finishing on 260 is a great effort and Wilson and Ifould really are hitting their straps with the bat for McLaren.

Num won the match for Gold taking 5/30 with his wily doorknob deliveries.

After 21 wickets fell on the first day there was little fireworks in the match between Port Elliot and Aldinga on the second day.

No outright and a dull end to a match that promised so much.

Elliot pocketed the first innings points and inflicted Aldinga’s first loss of the year.

Round four is another two day affair and the Bays are off the turf and travel to a very stirred up Aldinga who will not be happy with their loss.

Edwards and M Lintern are firing at the top of the order for the Bays, while the Bay bowling is very strong with captain C Lintern fresh from an eight wicket haul in round three, Butler and Luke Henderson all in good form.

Bryce Garrard is the wicket the Bays want, but Keith Schofield is bowling with renewed vigor and will worry the Bay bats.

McLaren Districts play Port Elliot and with Smith and Clarke in good form with the bat for Elliot this match will be close.

Elliot are playing well and it will be interesting to see how they handle the experience of Ifould, Wilson, Petrucci and Duncombe.

Mount Compass Maroon play a rejuvenated Goolwa and this match will be important for both teams, as confidence is crucial as the season progresses.

Martin and Cummins with the ball are doing the job for Maroon and Bartsch and Binns are holding the batting together, but be wary of the youngsters at Goolwa who are not intimidated by playing A grade cricket.

Ward and Jones proved that last week when the game was there to be won and they held their nerve and played a major role in one of the best wins the club has had in recent history.

The big match this weekend is the replay of last year’s grand final.

Willunga are struggling at present and need their power bats to go on a make a big score.

Peek, Harding, Thomas and McCauley need to make more of their starts, as the talent with the ball is outstanding.

Hockham, Minot, Elliott and the Williamson brothers are a well balanced unit and will need to be to rock the batting order of East, Tomlinson, Barrett, Nitschke, Brown and Nash.

Gold are winning their games, but only just and will need breakthroughs from their opening bowlers McMillan, Vitkunas and Dalitz.

Another superb round coming up this weekend with all teams in hot contention to play finals in 2009/10.

Every team has won a game and only Mount Compass Gold has won all three.

It is tight and this round will surely add to the intrigue.
