FOOTBALL: At the Great Southern Football League’s annual general meeting held last Monday, the 10 clubs voted for changes to the controversial points system.
The total points rating for 2010 are - top three teams (Willunga, Strathalbyn and Langhorne Creek) will be allocated a total of 11 points, middle four teams (Mount Compass, Victor Harbor, Goolwa/Port Elliot and McLaren) will be allocated a total of 13 points and bottom three teams (Encounter Bay, Myponga/Sellicks and Yankalilla) will be allocated a total of 15 points.
The vote was a resounding seven clubs to three for the changes.
The approved player points system (APPS) was introduced in 2008 and replaced the flawed and abused salary cap.
The points for the first two years of the system, which has now been replaced, was the top six teams had 11 points and the bottom four teams had 14 points.
To many club officials, players and supporters it seemed imbalanced that the team that finished out of the five would go into the following year on the same points as the premiers.
The APPS can be amended on a season by season basis subject to the approval of the Great Southern Footall League and the Community Football Board.
Any proposed amendments to an APPS should be submitted to Glen Rosser, Community Football Board general manager for referral to the board by no later than the July 31 for the following season.
Clubs through their league can request exceptional club ratings in excess of 15 points by March 1 preceding the season.
Round one of the 2010 GSFL season kicks off on April 10.
