Moore’s Mail Medal

02 Sep, 2009 03:04 PM
FOOTBALL: Langhorne Creek’s Ben Moore won the 2009 Great Southern Football League Mail Medal on Wednesday night (August 26) at the Hotel Victor.

Moore polled 24 votes, one more than runner up Brad Haskett from Willunga.

At the completion of round 17, Moore was on 24 votes with Haskett on 21 and in round 18 Haskett polled two votes to enable Moore to win the medal outright.

Medal favourite, Willunga onballer Mitch Portlock, polled 19 votes to finish third with Victor Harbor’s Matthew Hodge and Sam Joraslafsky and Goolwa/Port Elliot’s Zac Ewer level in fourth with 18 votes.

A tight count enthralled over 250 people who attended the prestigious event.

Moore thanked the Langhorne Creek Football Club and the league on receiving the award.

“It is my first time in the Great Southern Football League and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

“The Langhorne Creek Football Club has been fantastic and the family involvement in the league is a great attraction.

“I would like to thank my wife and Mum and Dad for their support during the year and of course my teammates,” Moore said.

The Reserves Mail Medal was three times as tight with the winners, Jim Batzavalis from Mount Compass, Rory Nixon from Langhorne Creek and Steven Walker from McLaren all tying on 18 votes and for the first time in GSFL history there were three winners of the Reserves Mail Medal.

Willunga’s Matthew Hoppo was second with 15 votes.

Leading goalkicking trophies were presented to Willunga’s A grade champion David Hams who kicked 121 goals and David Kelly from Yankalilla Reserves who kicked 59 goals.

Barry Pilmore was awarded coach of the year leading Willunga to another minor premiership and coaching the GSFL association side in June and the Southern Districts zone team in July at Port Pirie.

Willunga won their second successive McCracken Cup after defeating Langhorne Creek in the final round by 69 points.

The Langhorne Creek Football Club capped off a good night for the club with two mail medallists and also winning the South Adelaide Cup, as the best performed club in the GSFL over the four grades.

Two players were awarded GSFL Player Life Memberships on the night and they were Langhorne Creek’s Ben Potts and Strathalbyn’s Kane Smith.

Both players achieved the milestones by playing 225 A grade games.

One of the highlights of the night was the presentation of Life Membership to the GSFL to executive member Neville Miller.

Miller’s work over 25 years in the GSFL has benefited all clubs with his passion for junior sport being at the forefront.

He has been a coordinator of the popular Mini League Carnivals and of the junior association teams.
