FOOTBALL: Myponga/Sellicks Football Club was the first club to get on the front foot to start the 2010 football season with the big announcement that former South Adelaide League coach and Adelaide Crows premiership footballer Clay Sampson would coach the club.
The club is riding high with this announcement and the inaugural senior colt’s premiership win in 2009.
The recruiting by the club has been selective to complement the great young list the club has.
Four time premiership captain at Morphett Vale, Jason Gaskin, is playing for the Mudlarks along with tough onballer Tim Howell, Matthew Ritter and Josh Gum.
Gum has had league experience at North Adelaide.
The club will also see the return of favourite sons Wade Hutchinson and Michael Tomlinson.
The Mudlarks finished a disappointing ninth in 2009, but under Clay Sampson it is sure to climb those rungs one at a time in 2010.
“I am really enjoying the opportunity to get back into country football,” the non-playing coach said.
“We identified early that fitness needed to improve, so we increased the workload and the players have taken it head on.
“The recruiting we have done will add important experience and it will help the youngsters adapt to A grade footy.
“There are three or four of the premiership colts that are ready to play As, so we have picked up players who will embrace the club.
“We are talking to a couple more, but we will make sure they are the right fit to develop the colts coming up.
“A big bonus is having last year’s coach Ben Princi playing and his work on the track has been a great example to everyone,” Sampson said.
President Shane Magor says it is all positive at the club.
“We have some great inclusions at the club and a great group of locals.
“Good numbers on the track, with the senior colts and other youngsters at the club learning the right way to play and prepare for a game of footy,” Magor said.
Myponga/Sellicks Football Club also has magnificent sponsorship with the Victory Hotel, LJ Hooker Aldinga, Myponga Plumbing, Fleurieu Milk and Unimin the major sponsors.
Season 2010 can’t come soon enough for the green and gold.
