New lights at the Creek

24 Apr, 2009 03:33 PM
FOOTBALL: Langhorne Creek Memorial Park now has the quality of lighting equal to AAMI Stadium number two oval.

This Saturday night will be used for the first time in the Anzac Day game between Langhorne Creek and Strathalbyn.

Langhorne Creek Sports and Social Club made the decision to install two new 25 metre light towers and lights, which will give the club the best lighting in the GSFL.

Coordinator Ken Follett says the project cost $60,000 and could not have been achieved without the support of business.

“The lighting is that good the cricket club will be able to host night matches in the future.

“Local electrician Phil James spent six days working on the lights and his services were invaluable and there were many more people who helped,” Mr Follett said.

Other projects implemented by the Parks committee are a new watering system and an upgrade to parking facilities at the rear of the clubrooms.

This year after the dawn service, shotgun breakfast and perhaps, for some, taking part in or attending an ANZAC march, the ball bounces at the Langhorne Creek oval at 12:00pm, as the colts kick off the second ANZAC day clash between these two local rivals.

Both of the Clubs will join with the RSL to provide a tribute to the local returned and still serving persons who have served their country.

A motorcade of returned service men and women, the reading of the ode and the lone bugler, followed by the toss of the coin by one of these ex-servicemen will precede the main game to be played under lights - with siren time at 6:30pm.

The two football clubs are combining to make sure that the RSL and the Diggers are remembered off the field while their continued rivalry takes place on the field.

This game will not only be played in memory of those fallen in far bigger clashes, but for the Daish Irrigation Cup and its associated prize money.

The cup, currently held by Langhorne Creek, will be up for grabs – adding to the competition on the night.

The best player on the night will be awarded the Smith-Follett Anzac medal named in honor of two locals, Brenton Smith and Ken Follett who both served their countries and football clubs.
