FOOTBALL: Defending Great Southern Football League (GSFL) premiers, Willunga, have announced the reappointment of coach Barry Pilmore as A grade coach for the 2010 season.
Pilmore, who has led the Demons to six straight titles, breaking a 1950’s club record, has kept his great squad together for another premiership tilt in 2010.
After leading the association team and the zone side to glory in 2009 as well as claiming another GSFL coach of the year gong, Pilmore has recently been appointed state country coach.
After assessing the coaching and playing requirements for 2010 and beyond, Willunga decided that Pilmore should have enhanced support and has appointed Gary Summerton to the position of A grade assistant coach.
“The committee had determined a strategic path to ensure that we maintained our position as one of the top sides in the league and that meant we had to look at how we coach and how we keep and develop our coaches and junior players to ensure they have the skills to go on at a higher level,” president Neil Lang said.
“Gary is a great talent scout and we will utilise his skills to identify the future players of our senior squads.”
Steve Jaggard has been appointed reserves coach in what was a tough choice from a field of great applicants.
Jaggard returned to Willunga last season so his son could play colts and ended up playing reserves football and helping out in any way he could.
Among Jaggard’s accolades is a stint as A grade coach at McLaren in 2007/08 and South Adelaide under 17s coach in 2006.
Jaggard played most of his junior footy at McLaren Vale before hooking up with South Adelaide and has captained both McLaren Vale and Willunga A grade sides.
“We are lucky that we have retained our senior coaches and added Steve Jaggard to the team to assist in development of younger guys coming up from the Colts side and continue the journey to keep Willunga at the top of the competition.”
“They are a fantastic bunch of guys who work together very well while contributing a great deal to the club,” Lang said.
In the colt’s ranks, Leith Renney has accepted the role of senior colts coach.
Renney is a true Willunga person and did a tremendous job to take out the junior colts premiership in 2009, which coincidentally was 20 years since he last coached that squad to a flag.
Trent Milford, who has coached at mini colt level for several years, is taking the junior colts helm.
Off the field, Willunga is happy to announce that Mile End Office Furniture continues as major sponsor in 2010.
Willunga Football Club is the second oldest continuously operating club in South Australia and has a proud family tradition.
The club plays its home games at Willunga Oval and the clubrooms are open every Thursday and Saturday night during the football season for meals with full bar facilities available and is a level two Good Sports Accredited club.
