KAYAKING: Five paddlers from Encounter Paddling competed in the national kayak championships at West Lakes from March 16 to 20.
Juniors Jordan and Cameron Bennett, veteran paddlers Michael Gallard and Paul Weymouth and open paddler Tim Symonds competed against paddlers from every state in Australia, and a small number of international paddlers from countries such as Japan, Korea, Samoa, Italy and Canada.
The competition is the highest level of competition for the sport in Australia and is one of the compulsory events for Olympic and Australian team selection.
On a number of occasions, Symonds raced against the current reigning Olympic gold medallist, Ken Wallace.
All paddlers competed extremely well with Michael Gallard winning an individual bronze medal and others making semis and finals.
Symonds had an excellent regatta, making a number of finals, as a 19-year-old competing against much older and more experienced paddlers.
