FOOTBALL: The Myponga/Sellicks Football and Cricket Club is having a reunion of its superiority in sport this weekend at the Myponga Sporting Club.
The club won the 1983 A Grade football premiership and will have members of the successful 1974, 1983 and 1984 A grade premiership teams attending.
The club is renowned for its community spirit and the reunion will incorporate the cricket club’s huge success from 1980 where it won three premierships in four years.
This included the thrilling three-run win against Port Victor, which is still ranked as one of the best ever grand finals played.
The teams of both sports comprised of Myponga people at a time when the football and cricket teams comprised of nearly the same names.
President of the Myponga/Sellicks Football Club Shane Magor says it will be a big weekend for the club.
“It has been a long time between celebration drinks in the footy, as the closest we have come was in 1997 when we were runner up.
“We had Reserves success in 2000 with a premiership and runners up in Reserves in 2001.
“We will have a crack this year in the senior colts who are aiming for the club’s first ever senior colts premiership.
“Comparisons are being made with the premiership teams of ’83 and ’84 to the current A grade and senior colts group with a very young team with exciting senior colts players coming through destined to play great A Grade football in the near future,” Shane said excitedly.
David Hutchinson was a member of both conquering sporting teams and is helping coordinate the day.
“It will be great to get to see some old faces again and in the cricket who can forget the bowling feats of Craig Martin and the stoic batting of Chris Thomas and of course the cavalier attitude of Russell Nunn,” David said.
