GOLF: The Fleurieu Golf Club has a rivalry unfolding that is reaching epic proportions.
Everybody in sport needs someone to push the other to perform at a higher level and Wayne Whitbread and Shane O’Callaghan are doing just that on the greens at the golf club located at Mount Compass.
The pair often travel to golf together and this month the rivalry rose to a new standard with both scoring holes in one.
“Wayne is an A grader on a four handicap and I’m a B grader on 16 and I’ve learnt a bit from him over the years and we have a great rivalry, as no one likes to lose the five bucks!!!
“So these holes in one added to our week to week, head to head, it has been a lot of fun,” Shane said.
Wayne scored his hole in one on February 3 on the 14th hole using his four iron.
It was Wayne’s third hole in one.
“Although it is my third hole in one it is still very exciting,” Wayne said happily.
“Off the stick the ball was going straight for it and I saw it hit the flag.
“One of my playing partners said it had gone over the back and another said it had gone in.
“Two of my playing partners, Matt and Hugh were in a cart, so they were at the hole first and picked the ball out of the hole and threw it in the air and then there were high fives everywhere.
“The course is fantastic and has one of the best layouts outside of Adelaide,” Wayne said.
The hole in one helped Wayne to have a great finish to his round, as he scored five under over the last seven holes.
Shane scored his hole in one on the Fleurieu Golf Club’s fifth hole on February 13 and it is the second time Shane has recorded the feat to keep in touch with mate Wayne.
“When I scored the first one everyone was genuinely congratulating you, but the second one it was like life is unfair, as there are many golfers who have not achieved it,” Shane said.
Shane teed off with his six iron and saw the ball go the 145 metres and drop into the hole.
“It was a very sweet shot that had one bounce just off the green and then roll into the hole.
“It was incredulous, as my playing partners knew it was my second hole in one in such a short time,” Shane said.
Shane’s first hole in one was in November, 2009.
“Wayne is one of my good mates and he scored his third hole in one only 10 days earlier and I have had to put up with him bragging about it, so I shut him up by scoring another myself,” Shane said satisfyingly.
However the last word comes from Wayne who looks forward to the golfing rivalry to continue.
“Good luck to Shane on scoring his second, but he must remember I have three,” he added.
