HOCKEY – The two Southern SAPSASA hockey sides finished in fourth position in the state carnival held from June 15-20 at Grange.
And there was no surprise that Georgia Giffen from the Aldinga Bay Hockey Club was chosen for the state team to compete in Newcastle. Not only did she perform exceptionally during the carnival but, despite her small stature is a force to be reckoned with not only at junior level in the South Coast Hockey Association competition, but also at women’s level.
The Southern SAPSAA teams consisted of girls and boys from schools around the Fleurieu Peninsula, most of whom play club hockey for the South Coast Association.
Both sides played in Division 2 of the competition.
Monday had the girls playing three games with the first being against Southern Yorke Peninsula who were the eventual winners of Div 2. The girls got off to a great start for their first occasion playing together.
They were forced to play defensively for a lot of the game but withstood the pressure well and kept the opposition scoreless for a nil all result. Unfortunately, this was only a “friendly” and no points were awarded for this game. Southern were to meet this team on two further occasions and weren’t able to beat them.
The girls went on to have a good win against Port 2 – 0 and a 0-all draw with Northern Yorke Peninsula. Everyone went home feeling tired but positive about the outcomes.
The boys had two tough games on the Monday. The first against South West saw them defending a lot of the time. However, it was pleasing that Southern was able to score a goal but unfortunately went down 1-4.
The second was against Airport Western and the boys made a strong start with a quick goal 5 minutes in. This spurred the opposition into action as they were able to run away, despite Southern’s valiant efforts, with the final score being 1-4 once again.
On Tuesday it was the girls’ turn to meet Airport Western. These were two very evenly matched sides with most of the play in the midfield. Neither goalkeeper had much to do as there were hardly any shots on goal and the result was a 0-all draw.
The second game for the girls was against Gawler. An early goal was scored by Gawler and this seemed to set the girls onto their back foot leaving Gawler the winners 0-1.
On Tuesday it was the boys’ turn to play three games, the first against Whyalla. The boys regrouped well after a disappointing first day and held the attack in this game. Southern were up 2-0 at half time and finished well to win 3-0.
Their next was against Mid North and a difficult one for spectators with the uniforms being almost identical. Mid North were the first to score but Southern showed their true fighting spirit and had evened the score by half time. The Southern girls cheering on the sideline seemed to inspire the boys who played really well to take the game 2-1.
The last for the day was against Lower Eyre Peninsula. This was a really hard fought game without a score being made until part way through the second half. Unfortunately it was LEP who won 0-1.
Wednesday’s games were a repeat of Monday’s for the girls. Southern Yorke Peninsula were too strong, defeating Southern 0-3.
The next against Port was the highlight. All players did extremely well and there was lots of attacking by Southern and some lovely goals. This was a real confidence booster with Southern being the winners 5-0.
Their final game was against Northern Yorke Peninsula. By now there were some tired bodies out there but both teams still managed to have a good battle resulting in another 0-all draw.
Wednesday held mixed fortunes for the boys. Their first was a real battle of the wills against Gawler with Southern being the first to score, Gawler equalising and then Southern fighting hard for the win 2-1.
The second was also a good battle against Port. Southern showed great determination but weren’t able to equal Port’s goal even though they had many chances. Port won 0-1.
Thursday had the Southern girls up against Airport Western who by now were only 1 point ahead in third place. Southern had lots of chances but couldn’t break through and the final result was a 0-all draw. This was also the final score in their second game against Gawler.
Thursday was the day for draws with the boys playing a 1-all game against South West, followed by a 0-all draw against Airport Western. Even though they must have been very tired by the time the third game rolled around the Southern boys dominated Whyalla to win 3-0.
On Friday the girls came up against Southern Yorke Peninsula for the third time and did well to hold them to a 0-all draw. The boys met Mid North but weren’t able to beat them on this occasion losing the game 0-1.
Overall the girls finished fourth in their Division and the boys finished equal fourth with Port. This was a great result and everyone agreed that the carnival had been both great fun and a great playing experience. It was wonderful to watch each player improve their skills as the week went on.
Mention must be made of the wonderfully patient coaching staff without whom participation in this carnival would not be possible. Gemma McKenzie, a Year 11 student at Victor Harbor High School, did a fantastic job coaching the girls, as did Leo Staak who is a teacher at Yankalilla Area School with the boys. Joh Tokarski from Victor Harbor High School also did a great job as convenor for the Southern team.
Well done to Southern players Jemima Walsh, Georgia Giffen, Brandon Jacobs, Isaac Beckmann and Drennen Millar for trying out for the state side.
