HOCKEY: Bill Threadgold and Tony Smith received life membership of the South Coast Hockey Association on October 16 at the Association’s AGM.
The two Victor Harbor Hockey Club icons have given many years of service to the sport they love as players, coaches, umpires and committee members.
Bill has been involved in the sport for 26 years and Tony 23 years.
“I was dumbfounded and shocked to receive the award,” Bill said.
“I am very appreciative, as I have a deep passion for the game.
“It is a family sport and all the family is involved.
“I have played with my brother and my two eldest sons Daniel and Riley and that gives you are real buzz.
“It shows the family attachment hockey offers,” Bill said.
Bill has done everything when it comes to the game of hockey.
He grabs the whistle when needed, helps in the canteen, plays, coaches and even is the current president of the Victor Harbor Hockey Club.
“There is nothing I have not done around the club and I have enjoyed every minute of it.
“It’s been a good ride.
“One of the highlights is captaining the second ever men’s premiership and it is a moment I will never forget,” Bill said.
Tony started playing at 10 years of age, umpiring at 14, and is currently the association match recorder for the past 12 years, played, coached and is umpiring coordinator for the association.
“I was surprised when I received the award and I was so honoured.
“I expected Bill to receive the honour.
“I am so appreciative and I will not say no to such an award,” Tony said.
Like Bill, Tony enjoys the family atmosphere of hockey.
“I would not miss it for the world.
“Both my brothers play and even Dad started at 50 to be involved with us.
“It is just a great game,” Tony said passionately.
Tony’s fondest memory is similar to Bill’s, as he was captain of the first men’s premiership team at the Victor Harbor Hockey Club.
“We could not get that first one, but from there we have not looked back.
“All teams are sociable so it extends past the playing field,” Tony said with a smile.
