BOWLS: A combined team of male bowlers representing Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island (Region 7) last week won the country round robin in Adelaide for the second year in a row.

Regional teams from all over the state competed over four days at Marion, Kensington/Marryatville, Payneham, and Ascot Park Bowling Clubs.

Over 150 bowlers represented the eight regions, region 7 won six matches, the only loss was to South East on day two.

The Fleurieu team finished with 12 points followed by South East 10, Yorke Peninsula 8, North East 8, Eyre Peninsula 8, Upper North 6, Eastern 4 and Lower North 0.

Selection was difficult and there were seven changes to last years winning side. A notable inclusion was 14 year old Brandon Whiley who was the youngest player to ever play in a round robin series, he bowled magnificently all week.

A dinner is arranged to celebrate the win.

THE TEAM: G Bulger (Clarendon), D Steinwedel (Kingscote), G Lawes (Morphett Vale), B Battams, S Bevin, L Carter, H Raymond, B Whiley, B Walling (McLaren Vale), R Binney, L Basford, D Clohessy, L Cleave, J Mcnamara, C Monk, B Smallacombe (Port Elliot), V Phillips (Strathalbyn), F Kelly, N Ninic, B Shepherd, and K Stock (Victor Harbor).

The Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island side was thrilled to have the series top team award go to Shane Bevin’s team of Kevin Stock, Bronte Smallacombe and Barry Battams.

The team missed out by one shot the previous two years, so it was a fitting reward for a very consistent group of players, Bronte was a team member for the first time.
