Clubs unite to honour two legends

NETBALL: Whilst it was business as usual on the court, Myponga and Mount Compass united as one on Saturday in memory and admiration for two great club people in Margaret Deacon and Wendy Anderson.

The event now held in their memory each time the two clubs meet is the ‘Margie Deacon Challenge Cup’ held between the Intermediate division one teams and the ‘Anderson-Deacon Challenge Cup’ held between the A Grade teams.

Margaret Deacon was particularly dedicated toward the development of junior players, and coached junior teams for a good number of years.

She also put time into coaching senior teams, played netball herself, and worked tirelessly as a committee member .

Wendy Anderson dedicated her time to the coaching and umpiring of senior players, was very much a club person and played netball also.

Both ladies had great commitment and dedication to their own club but they also had great respect and many personal affiliations with each other’s club.

Margie knew a number of the Mount Compass players well through her work at McLaren Vale Foodland and also had played netball with a handful of Mount Compass players over the years who for various reasons switched from playing for Myponga to Mount Compass.

Wendy moved across to the Myponga club for a short while when her daughter, Joelene, played for the A2 grade.

During this time Wendy also got involved in helping out with scoring and timing at Myponga and became known over there.

Wendy left them with a green and gold rug which she crocheted to be used to keep the bench players warm.

Both Wendy and Margie were made Life members of their respective clubs for their efforts quite some years ago.

These sorts of strong connections between the two clubs make for a fierce but friendly competition whenever the two clubs meet.

It was a great result for the introduction of this special on-going event.

Mount Compass were the winners of the Intermediate division one ‘Margie Deacon Challenge Cup’ and Myponga won in the A grade to take home the ‘Anderson-Deacon Challenge Cup’.

It was very special to have Jackie Deacon (daughter-in-law of Margaret and David Deacon) and Geoff Anderson (Husband of Wendy) on hand to present the respective cups.
