Great Southern dominate squads

02 Jul, 2009 10:57 AM
NETBALL: Great Southern juniors make up a majority of the Southern regional academy teams to compete at ETSA Park next week.

The Southern regional academy is a combined side with players selected from the Southern Hills, Kangaroo Island and Great Southern competitions.

Great Southern Netball Association president, Jocelyn Bayly said it was a great effort for Great Southern players doing well.

“The amount of players selected in these squads is great for our competition but also highlights what is needed to be done to make netball in the Southern region better,” Ms Bayly said.

Southern academy program manager Michelle Glazbrook explained that the Great Southern plays are “just better” than there fellow league team mates.

“Kangaroo Island don’t have an under 17 competition so that is why there are no players in that side,” Ms Glazbrook said.

“With Willunga moving some of their sides from the Southern Hills league to Great Southern also is a factor for Great Southern having a lot of representative players.

“But, in saying that, the Southern Hill and Kangaroo Island leagues are improving each year.”

After the fantastic showing by Great Southern during the June long weekend country championships, the Southern academy teams go in to the two-day carnival confident of success.

Southern academy head coach Deb Delderfield is happy with the way the academy teams are looking.

“The teams are shaping up quiet well, we have, just last week, cut the academy girls back from around 20 in each team to the top 10 which was a difficult process and I hope we got it right,” Ms Delderfield said.

“Great Southern had great results at country championships but the regional championships are different again. They are the next step up but they are also different age groups.

“Country championships are 17 and under, 15 and under and 13 and under where the regional championships are under 17, 15 and 13. The girls are much younger. “We had a carnival at Murray Bridge in May against a few regional sides and we fared quiet well.

Ms Delderfield said that the Eyre Peninsula and the South East have had academies for around eight years and have more experience in comparison to the Southern academy.

“I would expect us to sit around the middle of the field. So if we come fourth or fifth it would be a great achievement,” she said.
