 A first for Chiton Rocks

A first for Chiton Rocks

17 Feb, 2010 01:58 PM
SURF LIFESAVING: First year nipper Blake Lindsay is the first ever Chiton Rocks nipper competitor to compete in his first carnival last Saturday at West Beach in the state title qualifying events.

He ran in the under 10 beach sprint race, finishing fifth and qualifying for the state titles quarter finals.

Then came the wade race where he just snuck in to qualify for the second round, only to then miss out by a couple of places on making it through to the state titles.

Lastly was the beach flags where he unluckily got knocked out in the second run.

Blake is a third generation Chiton member, with his grandfather, Robert Lindsay a life member of the club and a great competitor in his day.

His father, Randall Lindsay, recently gained his bronze medallion and his uncle, Aaron Lindsay, is the club’s vice-captain.

Blake and his family really appreciated the Henley under 10 group and their leaders taking him under their wing and making sure he was in the right spot at the right time.

The club is hoping Blake will inspire others from the growing Chiton nipper group to start competing and show their stuff at nipper carnivals next season.

The following day, Aaron Learey competed in his first ever carnival at West Beach, gaining a second place in the under17 two kilometre run and also competing in the beach sprints and flags for the first time.

Aaron will now go on to have a go at the senior state championships in a few weeks time.

The club’s boat crew entered their first competition for the season on February 7 at the Brighton Jetty Classic in the new surf boat, aptly named the ‘Robert Lindsay’.

Tibor Szolnoki, Aaron Lindsay, Leo O’Callaghan, Graham Lee and newly acquired sweep Trevor Ferguson rowed their first races together, and the results can only improve from here, next will be the masters and senior state titles.

Chiton Rocks beach will be patrolled on weekends and public holidays from 1pm-5pm through to the end of Easter.
