Mason, 13, shot local rider Tim Lawrence getting the full force of a big wave on September 29.

“I went out for a surf that day, it was a great day with perfect winds,” Charlie said.

“After a surf I went in the water for two hours to get some photos.”

Surfing and photography, are two great passions for Mason.

“It’s so great, I love it both, it’s really challenging,” he said.

Charlie described that being a surfing photographer is a lot more difficult than it looks.

“You have to be a really strong swimmer to get through the waves and rips out there to get the right shot.”

Mason’s shot of Lawrence is one of his best he has taken.

“That photo just looks awesome, it’s all about the positioning.”

“I got completely smashed by that wave after the shot, but I think it was well worth it.”

Mason said the shot was taken with “a $200 camera”.

“I am hoping to get a better camera for Christmas,” he said.

“A better camera for the surf conditions would probably cost in the thousands.”
