National knockout

BOXING: Former Port Elliot netballer Elisha Buckley has been crowned a national boxing champion earlier this month in Canberra.

Representing Western Australia, after Buckley moved for working committments earlier this year, Elisha defeated the then current national champion Kaye Scott in the 75 kilogram class on points.

“I was confident at the end of the fight that I had won, because the crowd knew the scores and the cheers in my corner after and during the fight were positive,” Buckley said.

The four, two minute round bout was the culmination of a year of hard work for Buckley, who only took up the sport full time in January this year.

“It was only my third fight and it’s a big achievement for me as Kaye (Scott) has been training and boxing for five years,” Buckley said.

Elisha did have some experience in the sport before as a personal trainer.

“I went to the Adelaide boxing academy a couple of years ago to learn the proper way of boxing for my course,” Ms Buckley said.

The decision to take up the sport was easy for Buckley.

“I was getting bored of netball,” she said.

Elisha’s first fight in August was one of mixed emotions.

“I was excited that it was my first fight but really nervous as well,” Buckley said.

Elisha said she would not be where she is today without the support her “amazing” family.

“Especially my dad, Dave, who travelled all the way over to Perth for my very first fight and surprised me by turning up in Canberra a few hours before my Australian title fight recently,” Buckley said.

“Although they would prefer I chose a less contact sport, they still support me 100 percent.”

Buckley is now preparing to take on the world next September at the world titles in Barbados.

“The world titles are going to be huge but I need some quality training beforehand,” Buckley said.

Elisha is after sponsorship and fundraising to help her get to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) for a two-week intensive training regime.

“The two weeks at the AIS is what I need to get that extra little advantage on my opponents.”
