VICTOR HARBOR - Every little girl's Christmas-time dream has come true for Victor Harbor's Poppy Francis this week, after she was selected to ride one of the Credit Union Christmas Pageant's original floats.
Six-year-old Poppy will be on top of one of the pageant's favourite horses, Nimble, and will be riding alongside Nipper. Both horses have been part of the pageant since 1933, the first year it ran.
Poppy, a reception student at Victor Harbor R-7 School, was one of eight girls selected to audition for the roles - four for each horse - because of her grandfather's connection to one of the credit unions involved.
Her audition was held two weeks ago, when she travelled to Adelaide to meet the two horses, and practice the smiling and waving she will have to do during her time in the top job. The girls also had to see whether they would be happy with being so high up, on top of the two horses.
Poppy's dad, Andrew, received the call to say Poppy had won the coveted role last week.
"But it was her birthday on Sunday (October 27), so we waited until then to tell her," he said.
"She got two fish for her birthday, and guess what she called them - Nipper and Nimble."
To top off Poppy's big day, her grandfather has booked her into a hotel room in Adelaide, so she's ready for the 7am hair and make-up start.
And what of the girl herself?
Poppy said she's excited to be in the pageant.
"My favourite part will be smiling and waving," she said.
The Credit Union Christmas Pageant will be held on Saturday, November 9, from 9.30am. It will begin at South Terrace, in Adelaide.
