The South Coast Board Riders (SCBR) held their first event of 2017 in glorious conditions at Waitpinga Beach on Saturday.

The Scott Alexander Memorial is held annually in memory of the late SCBR member Scott, who sadly passed away five years ago.

Saturday’s event was attended by over thirty south coast surfers. Fun three- to four-foot peaks gave surfers plenty of opportunity to find impressive rides.

The wave of the day award, presented by local men's clothing brand Yeo Haus, was won by Dayle Adams who found some great waves in the repechage ‘Thunder Dome’ to force his way into the final.

After a big day of surfing the six-man final came to a climactic finish with Khai Adams (Victor Harbor) claiming the win after finding an excellent ride in the last minutes of the final. Adams narrowly defeated Max Longhurst (second), Alex Rix (third), Joel Vandestelt (fourth), Dayle Adams (fifth), Dan Keelan (sixth). Keelan was also awarded the best placed Veterans Award.

After accepting the trophy, Khai said "today was great. We had so much fun and the waves were great. I'm honoured to win Scotty's comp. It means a lot".

The women's final was won by Francesca Narni. Fran rode some impressive waves and her powerful backhand surfing proved too strong for her rivals. A thrilled Fran said "wow, I am shocked… I never win. Thank you. We had a great time surfing today and I look forward to the next round".

Other awards on the day included the Stacey Surfboards Surfer of the Event, which was presented to Ryan Curnow. The BANJAR Best of the Tribe was awarded to Vance Gordon. Cody Spiers won the Royal Family Hotel Most Improved. The SCBR will hold the second round of their 2017 Junior Club (SCBR Groms) championship this Sunday at Middleton.
