Round one of Great Southern football started with a bang with the reigning premiers getting rolled and the team which finished third looking second rate.

MILESTONE: Strathalbyn's Nathan Duffield celebrated his 400th senior game on Saturday against Victor Harbor with sons Elliott and Fletcher.

MILESTONE: Strathalbyn's Nathan Duffield celebrated his 400th senior game on Saturday against Victor Harbor with sons Elliott and Fletcher.

Victor Harbor under new coach Clint Alleway did a job on Strathalbyn defeating them by 24 points. Alleway booted five goals to be instrumental in the victory. Rooster club champion Nathan Duffield played his 400th senior game and the rest of his mates failed to lift for the occasion.

Langhorne Creek proved they are better team in 2017 with an 11 point victory over Mount Compass. Howell, Derham, and Perrey were the stars for the Hawks and like Alleway, a great debut for new coach Clint Godwin.

Encounter Bay received a scare against last season’s wooden spooners McLaren, getting up by 26 points. When in trouble it was the usual crew which made sure the team grabbed the two points.

Willunga look to be the team to beat after they gave Goolwa/Port Elliot a football lesson. The Demons won by 56 points, the largest margin of the round. Yankalilla easily defeated Myponga/Sellicks with Ryan Fisher booting five goals.

Round two will once again hold a surprise or two. It will not be at Myponga, as the Bays will have the answers in Davis-Neale, Sharples, Karpany, Miels, Horrocks and Turner. Dahlitz is a find for the Mudlarks and it is good to see Gum playing. Will Hooper will have a great duel with Duldig.

Kiss Of Death – Encounter Bay by 30 points.

McLaren will host Willunga under lights and the Demons are building on last season. The height of Haskett and Standfield will cause trouble, as will the run of Beath, Hutchens, Altus and Burdett. James Mathews is a youngster to watch for McLaren, while Proctor is a jumping machine and will require more support.

Kiss Of Death – Willunga by 35 points.

Victor Harbor play Yankalilla and the Roos will need to contain Fisher and Hinge if they are to get up. Brown and Bartlett are the men to do that.

Kiss Of Death – Victor Harbor by 7 points.

Goolwa/Port Elliot meet Langhorne Creek and the Hawks are sure to give the Magpies more pain through Perrey and company.

Kiss Of Death – Langhorne Creek by 14 points.

Mount Compass take on Strathalbyn and it is hard to fathom one of these sides will go to the Easter break without a win.

Kiss Of Death – Strathalbyn by 2 points.
