The South Adelaide Football Club League side has opened the 2017 SANFL season in solid fashion registering four wins and one loss. The six point loss came at the hands of Adelaide in the Encounter Bay Easter match, but wins have been recorded against West Adelaide, Glenelg, Norwood and a convincing victory in the last round against North Adelaide placing the Panthers in third place on the table.

Strong performers in the League side have been Ben Heaslip and Rigby Barnes (Encounter Bay), Adam Hunter (Mt Compass) and providing a great target up forward is Sam Overall (Victor Harbor), who is equal leader in the Ken Farmer Medal with 16 majors to date.

At Reserves level promising signs have been shown by Jesse McKinnon (Victor Harbor), Joey Tyllis (Yankalilla)and Tom Neville (Victor Harbor)

The Panthers venture to Elizabeth this Saturday to take on Central District and then on Sunday, May 28 host reigning Premiers Sturt at Hickinbotham Oval.

Mixed results at Junior level for South with the Under 18s undefeated after five rounds, while the Under 16s were unable to break through for a much deserved win in their seven game season.

In the 18s, Encounter Bay’s Jimmy Bradford and Tarak Illingworth, Nathan Krueger (Victor Harbor), Willunga’s Job Colwell and Kane Milford and Haydn Sampson (Myponga/Sellicks) are all showing great signs as their football develops.

For the Under 16’s, Great Southern players who trained in the Panthers Football  Academy and went on to represent the Panthers in the U16 SANFL season included Aaron Douglass, Tom Neville, Jake Austin of Willunga, Lachlan Costello, Marcus Lippett and Wade Sweetman (Encounter Bay), Oliver Price and McKale O’Flaherty (Goolwa/Pt Elliot), Jack Fitzgerald and Adam Terrell (Yankalilla), Ben Hamilton and Connor Sampson (Myponga Sellicks) and Matt Ayris (Victor Harbor).
