Encounter Bay’s Cathy Venning says it will be an honour to represent her country at the Canoe Marathon Masters World Cup in South Africa next month.
It’s the first time in the green and gold for me, which is exciting.Cathy Venning.
Cathy will compete alongside fellow Encounter Paddling Club member Marc Brehin in Pietermaritzburg in early September.
Cathy and Marc will compete in singles and together in the mixed K2 events (double kayak).
This Sunday they will compete on their home waterway, when the Paddling SA State Singles Marathon Championships are held at Encounter Lakes.
“This Sunday will give us a final hit-out before we fly out in preparation for the world championships in South African,” Cathy said.
“Four of the Australian competitors are from South Australia, and two from our Encounter Paddling Club.
“It’s the first time in the green and gold for me, which is exciting.
“It will be an honour to represent Australia.”
Marc and Cathy qualified for the world championships after a stellar result at the Australian Marathon Championships, held in March.
Cathy finished first in her age group in K1 and then together with Marc in the K2 event.
“Marc is the Australian champion and I am so pumped to be named in the Australian team,” Cathy said.
“Marathon paddling includes having to portage every 4km, where you have to come in, get out of your boat and carry it, running the length of the beach and jump back in again,” Cathy said.
The 24km distance is comprised of six laps around Encounter Lakes. Competitors have to dismount and run 80m five times.
“By including the portages, they’ve tried to make canoe marathon a bit more exciting for spectators.”
