Victor Motors are encouraging drivers to ensure they get their car log book serviced regularly, to decrease running costs and increase the lifespan of the vehicle.

According to Luke Drummond of Victor Motors, it is vital that people stay up to date with their service history.

Mr Drummond said that not only does regular log book servicing increase the efficiency of the car, a full service record also adds value and makes the car easier to sell when the time comes.

Mr Drummond’s statements are supported by the RAA, which claims that when a car’s out of tune, it’s not running at its optimum level, significantly increasing the amount of fuel the engine drinks.

According to raa.com.au; “Ensuring the engine is correctly tuned, filters are clean, wheels are aligned and fuel and ignition systems are operating correctly could save you hundreds of dollars a year. In fact, dirty air filters alone can increase fuel usage by about five per cent.”

The most common repairs required involve oil leaks, electrical and lighting, tyre replacement, and worn out suspension components.

The RAA’s Mark Borlace says that when buying a car, it is vital to check the car’s service history.

“Even if the seller seems reputable, it’s still a good idea to check the car’s history so you can make an informed purchasing decision,” he said.

The average cost of repairs required on used cars is $415, but this can surpass $5,000 if the vehicle needs major repairs to the engine or transmission.

The most common repairs required involve oil leaks, electrical and lighting, undersize disc rotors, tyre replacement, and worn out suspension components.

“You don’t want to end up out of pocket by paying hundreds to thousands of dollars in repair or loan costs just because you didn’t do any research,” said Mr Borlace.

“Cars are a big and important purchase, and it’s better to do a check and be safe rather than sorry for both yours and your family’s safety and finances.”

The RAA recommends you regularly change oil and use the grade recommended by the vehicle manufacturer; ensure there’s plenty of water in the radiator; and check your logbook and book in a service.
