GREAT SEASON: Goolwa/Port Elliot defender Dale Cuthbert has performed well for the Magpies in 2017 and has been rewarded by being selected in The Times Great Southern Football League Team of the Year. Cuthbert has been named in a back pocket.

The Times 2017 Great Southern Football League Team of the Year has been selected.

All 10 GSFL coaches nominated players from their clubs who had played well in 2017 and nominated the coach who deserved the honour of being Coach of the Year.

Coaches who received votes were Yankalilla’s Ben Kane, Langhorne Creek’s Clint Godwin, Willunga’s Steve Jaggard and Mount Compass’ Peter Galbraith. The coach with the most votes from his peers was Peter Galbraith.

Forty three players were nominated from the 10 coaches and the list was then presented to the Coach of the Year who placed the side.

“Forty three does not fit into 21, does it? All players nominated deserved to be selected, as we have such a deep and talented player pool in the GSFL,” Galbraith said.

I would love to coach this team, as it has great balance and would do the Great Southern Football League proud. It would have any opposition team in a spin. There are many who have missed out worthy of selection. - Peter Galbraith

“I am very humbled to be chosen by my fellow coaches and it is indeed an honour. It would be a great team to coach and all the players had fantastic years. I would love to coach this team each week, as it has great balance and would do the Great Southern Football League proud.

“I would like to thank The Times for initiating this concept. It is a great discussion point and raises interest in our footy. There are many who have missed out and are definitely worthy of selection, It is a tough task to pick this side and there is an argument for those who have missed out.”

It is the third year in a row Galbraith has been selected as the Coach of the Year and it is the third year in succession he has led his team into a grand final. Galbraith said the side selected has great scoring power, the mid field rotations would be exciting and the defensive rebound would be unstoppable.

“To have Hoban being able to swap with James in ruck, Kellock and Sidebottom to mix it up with Beath and Fry, and Daniel to drift forward to give Miels a run on the ball would have any opposition team in a spin,” he said.
