Improved method of replacing hips

ADVERTISING FEATURE

The launch of the Adelaide Hip Centre at Flinders Private Hospital on November 24 provides patients with a comprehensive service for the management of hip disorders, including direct anterior approach hip replacement surgery, hip arthroscopy, hip trauma and revision hip replacement.

Patients at Flinders Private Hospital receive the latest innovations in hip replacement procedures, resulting in optimal outcomes for the patients including shorter recovery times.

One of the most compelling aspects of the Adelaide Hip Centre is the direct anterior approach hip replacement procedure.

This procedure is a minimally invasive approach used to perform a total hip replacement.

The difference in this method of hip replacement surgery is the way in which the surgeon inserts the artificial joint, which is through the front (i.e. anterior) of the hip, without having to cut any of the muscles (as is the case with the posterior or lateral approach).

The surgeons are able to utilise the natural planes between muscle groups, meaning no muscles are cut during the procedure, which generally means there is a faster return to mobilisation, in most cases the same day of surgery.

This means there is less time spent in hospital, faster rehabilitation, reduced blood loss and a faster return to daily activities.

Goolwa resident and former direct anterior hip replacement patient, 90 year-old Anthony Rix, successfully underwent the procedure in October.

“There was absolutely no pain at all (after the operation), no bleeding and no soreness” Anthony said.

“I was up and walking pretty much straight away.”

Anthony, a keen golfer, even made his return to the greens earlier this month.

“Well I’m not a good golfer by any means, but I’m a keen one, so it’s good to be back on the course now.”

At the Adelaide Hip Centre there is no cost for the initial consultation. Patients will be able to see an Orthopaedic Surgeon within a week, rapid access to surgery if required and a fast track to follow up appointments.
