Encounter Lutheran College trekked across the Victorian border from December 2-8 to participate in the annual Australian School Basketball Championships.

While their U17s team performed well to finish fifth in their division, the U20s team were able to overcome strong opposition in both pool matches and finals to win the National Division 2 Championships.

Encounter’s U20 Boys can now reflect on a six-point comeback victory over Melbourne High School in the semi-final, where a 12-0 run to finish the game saw them beat a school with over 300 Year 12s.

Along with a victory over Maribyrnong in the grand final (a school boasting a first-class basketball program with 150 athletes), Encounter punched above its weight and now proudly has gold medals to commemorate a memorable week away.

A fitting conclusion to their year, the college hosted its annual Encounter Hoops Classic on December 12. It invites current students and Old Scholars, along with energetic staff, to take part in a game of basketball.

Defending champions, MORT, were victorious on the night, with a gathering of staff, students and families on hand to celebrate.
