Members were disappointed that Saturday pennants were cancelled due to excessive heat, but were happy with a drop in temperature which made for comfortable bowling conditions on Sunday when Glenelg bowlers came to the Port Elliot Bowling Club intent to win and take home the Port Elliot Bowling Club/Glenelg Shield.
With several members caught up in Great Southern Bowling Association 4’s finals at Strathalbyn, Port Elliot was pushing to raise sufficient numbers for this annual interclub tournament.
However, co-ordinator Norman Taylor did a mammoth job of raising 50 players to match Glenelg’s numbers and the day proceeded with great camaraderie as players renewed friendships and made new friends. The icing on the cake was that Port Elliot won the shield with 244 shots to Glenelg’s 219.
Port Elliot’s four’s men’s champs and fours women’s champs, played at Strathalbyn on Sunday for the Association title.
The men’s team, Chris Monk, Jimmy Gamble, Phil Hollow, Wayne Reynolds played Yankalilla in the first round and were defeated by just 2 shots. The women’s team, Helen Taylor, Eileen Love, Libby Henschke, Joylene Liebelt, played a remarkable first round against McLaren Vale.
They didn’t get a very good start, were 12 shots down before getting on the card, and then breezed through to win the game 14-13. However they were then defeated by Willlunga in the second round.
Congratulations to both teams on making it through to Association finals. Social Bowls are played at Port Elliot every Thursday/Saturday afternoon. Come & Try for adults and juniors every Friday 4pm to 5.30pm. Names and contact numbers on outside noticeboard or phone the club 8554 2317.
