There was a sensational finish to the Championship Mixed Pairs grand final when Joy and Ian Fuller met Bronwen Mullen and the evergreen Bob Vowles. The match was evenly poised toward the latter stages, until Bob unleashed his winning bowl. It was an attempt to put the jack in the ditch, but it ‘pineappled’ most of the way before a wick saw the bowl get onto its running surface and drew right to the jack.
Bob admits he has never seen a bowl like it and has been bowling for more years than most. Bronwen and Bob are the Mixed Pairs champs for this season.
Thursday’s Super Triples winners of the day were Encounter Bay’s Geoff Berg, Dennis Gray and Leo Staak on 56+18, followed by Des Manuel, John Read and John Pawlowski. Third place went to the birthday boy Ian Sellars, with Bill Nash and Peter O’Sullivan. Winners of losers went to the Cotton brothers from Yankalilla and Gisborne, Barry and Roger, ably supported by Gary Cooper. Ladies’ Pennant doesn’t start again until January 18. Social bowls will continue next Saturday; names in by 10am.
