The Great Southern Slammers Div 1 Women's side competed at the State Country Championships on Australia Day weekend and ended up winners of the 'B' grand final.
Coach Jane Downes said the team got off to a shakey start on Friday night with players not able to hit shots and generally not gelling as a team.
Saturday saw some improvement with strong defence from Rachel Searle and Shanika-Anne Barr and good shooting from Maddi Round and Lucy Earl.
“Unfortunately we lost two matches after being up by 10 points, which cost us the chance to play in the 'A' final. On Sunday the entire team played to their full potential which gave us two big wins, including the grand final against Eastern Hills which we won 47 to 36,” Jane Downes said.
Maddi Round ended up top scorer for the entire championship with Lucy Earl coming runner up. The girls came up against some of the best players in the state and they well and truly held their own, they should be proud.
Great Southern also won the Under 18 Girls Division 3 championship, which made it a very successful championships for the association.
