A master plan for a new facility at the Goolwa Port Elliot Football Club is firmly on Mr X’s radar in the lead up to the state election.
This week, SA-BEST candidate for Finniss Joe Hill pledged $300,000 towards replacing the club’s 38-year-old club rooms and 65-year-old change rooms if elected next weekend.
A major upgrade has been on the cards for many years as the club collaborated with Alexandrina Council to find a way to make it happen.
Club president Ryan Bridges said the oval was in fantastic condition but the facilities were outdated.
“We’re looking at a brand new complex now… it would mean everything for us to stay in our favourite location but have something new and fresh.”
He said the upgrades would also benefit other sporting clubs that utilise the complex.

“We’re hoping with funding from government, local council and other sources we can build our building, new club room and change rooms but have left over (funds) to do other things around the place like lights, netball courts and more.”
Mr Bridges said it was still early days but with the plan they have in place, it could be a very quick turn around if the club gets everything right.
Mr Hill said the upgrades would also facilitate the rapid growth in women’s footy in the district.
“If we’re serious about embracing women’s footy and making our community facilities accessible, we need to put our money where our mouth is,” he said.
