Geoff Brock pushing for Warnertown Road upgrade

Road trains may soon be able to enter Port Pirie via Warnertown Road if Independent Member for Frome Geoff Brock has his way.

Mr Brock has been openly negative towards the current route which uses George’s Corner, which is seven-kilometres north of the Warnertown Road entrance.

He has said the intersection has its own “dangers” as it is “not designed to cater for road trains turning left”.

“(George’s Corner) has no left turn slip lane, making it difficult, and risky, for road trains to negate,” Mr Brock said.

The route Mr Brock would like to see become available requires upgrades to two level railway crossings before it is able to be used by road trains.

“This route (Warnertown Road) is far more conducive to the safety of heavy vehicle turning movements, with both left turn slip lane into the city and a right turn protected merge lane for exiting the city,” he said.

Mr Brock wants to see the upgrades completed before grain harvest season, to assist the grain industry.

But, it’s not just the grain industry that would benefit, as Mr Brock touted the upgrades’ ability to help Port Pirie biggest employer, Nyrstar.

“It would assist Nyrstar with getting road trains into the smelter,” he said.

Moving towards a State Election in just over 200 days, Mr Brock will put pressure on Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis to address the issue.

“I strongly urge the minister to give this project priority for the safety of all road users,” he said.
