Council's list of priorities ahead of the state election

Port Augusta mayor Sam Johnson has stood by a list of the city’s top priorities heading into the election.

The list, which was compiled in November 2013 in preparation for the state election, outlines nine things that council would like to see addressed by the state government.

Priorities include closing the gap for Aboriginal citizens, solar thermal power, transport options for the city as well as the cooperation between local and state government.

The nine priorities discussed in the report specifically apply to Port Augusta and the report highlights a desired outcome for each issue.

Many of the priorities are not new, with Yorkeys Crossing, duplication of the Joy Baluch AM Bridge and restoration of the town hall precinct featuring.

There have been very few announcements concerning the list of priorities at this stage of the election campaign, and very few Ministers or Shadow Ministers visiting Port Augusta.

While Mr Johnson didn’t consider Stuart a safe Liberal seat, he did admit it wasn’t marginal.

“It does though, concern me that we are not in a margin of under two per cent, they seem to get the dollars,” he said.

“[you] only have to look at the 2010 election, as by this stage of the game we had a $5m commitment from both major parties in the bag.”

With candidates for the seat of Stuart finalised on Monday, Mr Johsnon is looking forward to hearing from them.

“I do sincerely look forward to hearing from all candidates, and hearing what they have to say about the city which makes up a large population base of the seat of Stuart,” he said.

“I would like to think any aspiring member will be in contact to find out how they can best serve the city of Port Augusta, and Port Augusta City Council should they be successful on March 15th.”
