Winemakers Matthew Caldersmith and Nicholas Bowen of Chateau Reynella have been named the 2014 McLaren Vale Bushing Kings.

The announcement was made at the McLaren Vale Wine Show awards 2014, which were presented at Penny’s Hill on Friday, October 31.

The Bushing Monarch title goes to the winemakers whose wine received the Best McLaren Vale Wine. This year’s top wine was the 2012 Chateau Reynella Shiraz, which is made from fruit grown in McLaren Vale and is produced at Hardys Tintara in the town’s main street.

Mr Bowen said it was great to receive the award, particularly given the high calibre of entries.

On accepting the award, he said it had been a hard year for the Hardys Tintara staff, as the site is undergoing a $3 million renovation.

Mr Bowen and Mr Caldersmith thanked the staff for their efforts in adapting to the disruptions and still producing a high quality wine.

As Bushing Kings, some of their tasks will include ringing the Angelus Bell at Wirra Wirra vineyard at McLaren Vale to welcome the vintage next year and promote the McLaren Vale region.

Mr Bowen grew up in a winemaking family in Western Australia. He moved to South Australia in 2009 to take up a job at Hardys Tintara as an assistant winemaker.

“I just jumped in a car and crossed the Nullarbor,” he said.

After the award-winning shiraz, Mr Bowen’s favourite types of wines are whites and sparklings. He particularly likes having a glass of wine at every meal with friends, or while in the bathtub.

Mr Caldersmith was introduced to the wine industry through his wife Megan, whose family once had the Quelltaler Winery in the Clare Valley.

He said winemaking is a mix of art and science, and working with vines, the fruit and people to make the product.

He is a particular fan of Tasmanian pinot noir, which he described as elegant and complex with a delicate tannins structure.

Tony Brooks – who presented the Bushing King award to Mr Caldersmith and Mr Bowen - was one of the founders of the McLaren Vale Wine Show. The show was launched in 1973 and was part of a week-long Bushing Festival to celebrate the new vintage. The event was the brainchild of David Hardy of Hardys Wines and aimed to be a way to help promote and boost the quality of wine in the area.

Mr Brooks said the Bushing Monarch idea sprouted from Saint Crispin’s Day – October 25. Traditionally, it was a day of all sorts of merriment and a king was elected for the day.

“He gave permission for the people to have fun,” Mr Brooks said.

The Bushing King’s role was to promote the McLaren Vale area far and wide.
