Fire at Victor Harbor's Hotel Grosvenor caused by candle

A fire at a Victor Harbor hotel early this week has not affected trade, the owner says.

Hotel Grosvenor guests woke to the sounds of fire alarms after a fire started in one of the building’s rooms on Monday, March 16.

The fire started on the ground floor in the hotel’s old private residence, which is now used for accommodation.

The Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) said the fire was ignited by a candle that was left unattended in the bathroom, which set a vanity unit alight.

The room was occupied by visitors from Gawler at the time.

The hotel estimates up to $30,000 damage was caused and significant repairs will need to be done to the bathroom area.

MFS received a call about the incident at 5.15am. Two appliances and nine firefighters attended the scene. The fire was contained to within that hotel room and was extinguished in about 15 minutes.

Crew left the scene just after 6.30am.

Two people were taken to the South Coast District Hospital; a male for smoke inhalation, and a female for a check-up. Both were released from hospital that day.

Hotel owner Andrew Hill got the call about the fire from maintenance staff that morning.

“My first thoughts were for the safety of the room’s occupants and that they were OK,” he said.

Mr Hill felt fortunate the fire was contained to a small area.

“It certainly could have been a lot worse.”

Mr Hill said it was business as usual that day and many staff members have chipped in to help in the clean-up, particularly with any soot that had entered other areas of the building.

He said works that will need to be done include new paint and carpets in areas near the site, and a replacement bathroom.

He thanks the MFS for their work and the support of staff, patrons and friends since the event.
