ARCHERY ROYALTY: Helga Kolbrun Magnusdottir from Iceland and Victor Harbor Archery Club's Sherry Gale.

When it comes to pure will, tenacity and determination, Sherry Gale has it all and more. The Victor Harbor Archery Club is proud to have her amongst its high achievers. As an ambassador for both Australian Archery and the Victor Harbor Archery Club, and as an archer willing to share her knowledge with others, Sherry has little time for relaxing – archery is her first love and all else comes secondary.

Sherry began her archery career after her son Jesse began shooting. As so often happens, she gave it a go and found a natural ability for the sport. She began using a Recurve bow, but soon changed to Compound due to a Compound bow providing more strength and accuracy for her shooting style. This all began in March of 2006 and by October that same year, Sherry was representing Australia at the Commonwealth Cup in India. Not a bad start for a beginner! It was from this point that her international presence in the field of archery began.

Her achievements to date include competing in four World Target Championships, three World Indoor Championships, one World Field and numerous World Cups in both Target and Indoor.

Sherry has been Australian National Target Champion six times, National Indoor Champion seven times and Best All Round twice. She was twice National Matchplay Champion and Australian Open Field and Target Champion.

The highlight of her career was finishing sixth place at the World Indoor Cup finals in Las Vegas. At this event she shot a World Record and also managed to break her own record by three points. Her latest conquest came in the recent Australian Open Championships held in Queensland, winning gold in the team and individual divisions.

Travelling to World Archery events enables Sherry to meet other ‘globe-trotting’ archers. Friendships are formed and it is a big thrill when an international archer accepts her invitation to visit Australia. One visitor is Helga Kolbrun Magnusdottir from Iceland.

Helga is Iceland’s top female Compound archer and when she is not shooting at home and at World Championships, she works as a Computer Scientist.

It has been of great benefit to the Victor Harbor Archery Club to have Helga shoot alongside its members.

The Australian getaway has also helped with her shooting, as a few weeks ago she shot her first ever perfect score at the club’s indoor shooting range at the Port Elliot Showgrounds. At the Brisbane Australian Open Championship in March, Helga won gold in the team event as well as setting a new Icelandic National Record. Sherry and Helga are about to set off to New Zealand to compete in the World Masters Games in Auckland. Following this event Helga will return to Iceland, but is already planning a return visit to Australia.
