Barry Fletcher is the City of Victor Harbor’s Citizen of the Year.
Young Citizen of the Year is Benjamin Pettman and Community Event of the Year is the Victor Harbor RSL Anzac Dawn Service.
Barry Fletcher is a selfless character who has tirelessly assisted many community organisations within Victor Harbor for more than 40 years. Barry has been involved with the Victor Harbor and Port Elliot Lions Club for 22 years.
Barry is also a volunteer with the Victor Harbor Riding for the Disabled, participates in badge days for various organisations and assists Encounter Bay Probus Club.
“This is the greatest honour ever bestowed on me. I am so proud to be a Lion. I recommend volunteering to everyone. You get to meet people and I do it because I love it,” Barry said.
“Being part of Lions makes you part of the community.”
Young Citizen of the Year Ben Pettman, was commended for his involvement with the Victor Harbor CFS cadet program, which commenced in 2010.
Ben was involved in the establishment of the program and in 2013, stepped in to the co-ordination role with responsibility for training, administration and the recruitment of new cadets. Ben is currently a member of the Hindmarsh Valley CFS.
I am s tokes and it is a real shock. We do the cadet program for the kids, as without them we would not have future firies in the area,” Ben said.
The Victor Harbor RSL Sub Branch Anzac Day Dawn Service has earned the reputation as one of the most significant and well attended commemorative events in regional South Australia.
“The Dawn Service brings the local community together to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have helped enshrine the freedom we all enjoy,” Victor Harbor RSL chaplain Brian Chalmers said.
Volunteers from the Victor Harbor RSL Sub Branch spend countless hours delivering the Dawn Service.
City of Victor Harbor mayor Graham Philp said Barry Fletcher, Ben Pettmann and the Victor Harbor RSL have made an outstanding contribution to the community.
“I congratulate them on their extraordinary efforts. There were a number of worthy candidates for these awards, which is reflective of the Victor Harbor community,” he said.
The 2018 Citizen of the Year Awards will be presented at the City of Victor Harbor’s Australia Day Celebrations on January 26, 2018.
