Local sailors Marcus Towell and his young crew Harry Lawson have won the Yvonne20 Catamaran National Titles held at the Victor Harbor Yacht Club over the Christmas /New Year period.
In a hard fought series of 10 races over five days, five boats from Western Australia and eight boats from Victor Harbor competed in excellent sailing conditions.
Unfortunately the wind dropped out on the last day, which made for some very difficult sailing.
Race 9 was abandoned as the time limit was exceeded, so it came down to the 10th and final race to decide the series. Four boats were still in contention, three of them WA boats, but Marcus and Harry prevailed to become national champions.
Locals Brianna and Grant Williams finished a creditable 5th and Handicap Series winners were locals Simon Meathrel and Brett Pearsons. Corey Williams and son Noah competed in their first Yvonne Nationals after only three previous times on board MK3. Corey returning to the sport after 20 years.
Once again the Victor Harbor Yacht Club provided a great venue, well run event, with fantastic volunteer support. These events would not be possible without the tireless efforts of the club’s small band of volunteers. A huge thank you to you all.
The next titles move back to Rockingham WA where it is hoped some of the Victor Harbor boats will make the journey across the Nullarbor.
